K9 - Dog Handler

About the role:

As a Correctional Officer, the Dog Handler will lead a Passive Alert Detection (PAD) dog to enhance the safety, security and good order of Parklea Correctional Centre.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct searches of inmates, visitors, staff, facilities, buildings and perimeter fences
  • Carry out internal and external patrols, either by foot or in a response vehicle
  • Maintain responsibility for the PAD dog, including ongoing obedience and skills training, kennelling, hygiene, exercise, health and welfare
  • Document and report inmate behaviour and intelligence information; and
  • Adhere to all relevant handling procedures, including evidence handling, narcotic storage, animal husbandry and operational use of K9s.

Skills & Experience:

You will ideally be skilled in delivering positive outcomes and results in a complex correctional environment. You will be an excellent people-person with strong interpersonal and communication skills. You will have personal values that demonstrate recognition that people can change, whilst embracing diversity and having a relentless focus on delivery and doing the right thing.

In addition, you must meet the following Selection Criteria:

  • Hold a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (this is a mandatory requirement)
  • Have a minimum 2 years’ experience working in a correctional environment (previous experience in dog handling is desirable, however not essential)
  • Hold a current, full Driver’s Licence
  • Hold a current First Aid Certificate
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate excellent negotiation skills
  • Demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity
  • Be able to work individually and within a team environment
  • Demonstrate resilience and an ability to take ownership in achieving objectives
  • Be able to pass the required fitness testing
  • Be able to successfully complete and pass the required Dog Handling course
  • Be willing to travel / stay interstate to attend the Dog Handling course if required
  • Have a secure yard to house the supplied K9 (photo evidence must be provided to demonstrate the yard space)
  • Undergo a physical yard inspection (if successful at the interview stage) 
  • Be willing to make the recommended improvements to the yard (at your own cost), if required after the inspection
  • Not have any other dog residing at the address whilst in possession of an MTC-BRS K9
  • Provide 2 current referees, whom you had a direct report to
  • Pass the Corrective Services NSW Security Clearance checks.
